AWS Resilience and Disaster Recovery: Selecting the Right Pattern
Choose an AWS disaster-recovery pattern by matching business RTO and RPO to architecture, automation, data replication and cost.
Core design principles
Classify services by recovery objective, not by popularity. Backup-and-restore, pilot light, warm standby and multi-site active designs solve different business problems.
Automate infrastructure recreation and failover dependencies. Templates, versioned configuration, DNS strategy, secrets and network prerequisites matter as much as compute capacity.
Exercise the plan under controlled conditions. Validate data currency, access paths, application dependencies, monitoring and the return-to-primary process.
Operational checklist
Define ownership, document the architecture and dependencies, protect privileged access, monitor the service, test recovery or rollback, and review the design after every material change.
